Our research activities cover a broad range of topics enclosing quantum optics, quantum structure engineering, laser physics, ultrafast phenomena and high field physics. The Institute for Quantum Electronics provides teaching of the physics curriculum for ETH students at all levels, including specialized lectures in quantum optics and quantum electronics for students in physics and electrical engineering.
The Institute for Quantum Electronics sees itself as part of an increasingly interdisciplinary research environment and has created fruitful links with other research entities at ETH Zurich. In particular, IQE research groups are active in the clean room facility FIRST and collaborate in the national center of competence in research (NCCR) Quantum Systems for Information Technology (QSIT). In addition, the leading house of the NCCR Molecular Ultrafast Science and Technology (MUST) in ultrafast phenomena is hosted in the IQE.
The education mission of IQE includes fundamental and applied areas in physics and electrical engineering. The central objective is to educate students at all levels in the fundamentals of physics, optics and electronics, and to train them in advanced subjects on nonlinear optics, laser physics, ultrafast phenomena, high field physics and quantum optics, as well as in the emerging field of quantum information science. It is the goal of IQE to convey the competences necessary for scientific work, the capability for solving intricate problems, and the skills necessary for working in team-oriented environments.
