The Institute was founded in 1988 on the initiative of Prof. Hans Melchior and Prof. Fritz Kneubühl and has since then been situated on the ETH Hönggerberg campus.

The initial focus of the institute was the research in laser physics, photonic devices, non-linear optics, ultrafast optics, and physical electronics. At the end of the nineties, a strategic choice was taken to focus the new hires in the fields of quantum optics and quantum nanostructures.
